If I intend to obey Jesus Christ, I must find the means of changing my inner being until it is substantially like his, pervasively characterized by his thoughts, feelings, habits and relationship with the Father.
DW (on p63) goes on to say: "WHEN NOT ON THE SPOT i can retrain my thinking by study and meditation on Christ himself...." That NOT ON THE SPOT part is key for me. If haven't "worked on this" ahead of time, how am i going to be ready for "the battle" or "the test" Too often i think i can get by on my own, without that conscious preparation...refection, study, prayer, meditation... But it's awfully hard for me to be truly self-sacrifical without it.
I am the same way. I think it goes back to an intentional discipline or mini-disipline.
I think I need to give myself a small chunk of time, several times a day, to visualize, if you will, what lay ahead. In those moments, ask God to guide my thoughts, words and actions. Also ask for the recognition of the presence of the Holy Spirit to help guide me in those moments for which I am not prepared.
Thanks. Your thoughts have helped give shape to what I need to do to continue this process of renovation.
Hey it is nice to see someone other than T and I on here, WELCOME!!!This book is great it allows me to spend the time getting to know what God has in store for me.Also makes me prepare time for me to read, study and Pray regularly. It also teaches me to practice the presence of God.My goal is to dicipline myself so I could do this with reading the Bible!!!If I intend to obey Jesus,I must find the means of changing my inner being.
Welcome to our online discussion of Dallas Willard and Jan Johnson's Renovation of the Heart in Daily Practice: Experiments in Spiritual Transformation.
Each day, Monday-Friday, I will post the title of that day's chapter and maybe an excerpt from the chapter. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to read that day's selection from the book then click on the comment link and add your $.02 to the conversation. If you are a highlighter maybe just share what you highlighted and why you highlighted it. Maybe something really resonated with you as you tackled that day's experiment, share that with us. Maybe, as happened with me, the first time I read the book, God will reveal something to you.
Read the comments that others leave, respond to each other, ask for clarification, let someone know you connected with a comment they left.
My hope is that working through this book together we will get much more out of it, we might not only grow in Christlikeness but grow closer to each other.
If you have any technical difficulties please email me at tkay3atcharterdotnet.
